Krzyżtopór Castle in Ujazd

Krzyżtopór Castle in Ujazd is one of the largest surviving palace ruins from 17th-century Europe, located in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in the Iwaniska commune. This impressive palazzo in fortezza combined the functions of a representative palace with modern fortifications. The construction is attributed to Krzysztof Ossoliński, with work lasting from 1621–1644 or 1631–1644. In 1655, the castle was destroyed during the Swedish invasion and has remained a permanent ruin ever since. Visitors can explore the pentagonal layout of bastions, the elliptical courtyard, the decorated palace facade, as well as the cellars and former stables that could hold at least 100 horses. The surroundings contain remnants of Italian gardens with paths, walls, and stone ponds, along with a cistern and a spring. The name refers to the symbols of a cross and an axe on the gate, and the castle is associated with a legend of 4 towers, 12 halls, 52 chambers, and 365 windows, symbolizing the calendar. This site attracts history enthusiasts and families alike, offering a chance to experience a former residence in its raw but legible state.
