Krzyżtopór – a castle like the world has never seen

Krzyżtopór is a monumental castle ruin located in the village of Ujazd in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, about 60 km from Kielce. The structure, built between 1621 and 1634 for Krzysztof Ossoliński, combined the features of a palace and a fortress, known as palazzo in fortezza. Before the renovation of Versailles, it was the largest palace building in Europe. The name derives from the founder's name and the Topór coat of arms, and was later changed to Krzyżtopór to reflect the owner's Catholic faith. The castle survived the Swedish Deluge but was destroyed during the Bar Confederation and has been in ruins for over 250 years. Visitors can admire the remains of five bastions, a three-story palace with an elliptical courtyard, and an octagonal tower. Several walking routes have been marked on the site, and entry is ticketed. This place is ideal for lovers of history, architecture, and picturesque landscapes, as well as for families and organized groups. There is a parking lot and public transport stop nearby, and a visit typically takes 1 to 3 hours.
