Krzyżtopór – a castle like the world has never seen

Krzyżtopór is a monumental ruin of a castle in the village of Ujazd in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, about 60 km from Kielce. Built between 1621 and 1634 for Krzysztof Ossoliński of the Topór coat of arms, the structure combined the comfort of a palace with the defensive features of a fortress, a style known as palazzo in fortezza. Its name derives from the founder's first name and family crest, later also referencing the cross as a symbol of faith. The castle was renowned for its grandeur – for a time it was the largest palace building in Europe, before Versailles was constructed. Despite damage suffered during the Bar Confederation, the surviving walls and elliptical courtyard remain impressive. Guided tours and marked routes make exploring easy, and during the summer season it is open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This is an ideal destination for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and families with children, offering a glimpse into the past. Free parking is available nearby, and toilets are on site. Krzyżtopór is one of Poland's most extraordinary monuments, best visited at dawn to avoid crowds.
