Silver Mountain Fortress
The Silver Mountain Fortress is a unique complex of mountain fortifications located in Srebrna Góra in Lower Silesia. It is one of the largest mountain defensive structures in Europe and an important military monument. The central point is the massive Donjon, from whose crown there is a scenic viewpoint. Tours are led by a guide dressed in a historical regiment uniform, who explains the fortress's history in an accessible way. The route includes casemates, a descent to an underground water intake with a 53-meter-deep well, an underground bridge, and a walk through the deepest moat in Poland. Visitors can see fortress artillery and even hear a shot from a black-powder weapon. There are also a modern multimedia trail about the fortress's construction and a seasonal summer trail about old crafts. On site, there is a restaurant and hostel in historic interiors. Night tours, school programs, and the Fortress Festival on the second Saturday of June are organized. Access is via a winding road from the parking lot at the Srebrna Góra pass, about a 15-minute walk. The site is open seasonally, and underground temperatures are around 10°C, so warm clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended.
