Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie is a former border crossing between East and West Berlin that became one of the most important symbols of the divided city during the Cold War. Located at Friedrichstraße 43-45 in the heart of Berlin, it now attracts crowds of tourists from around the world. It was here, in October 1961, at the height of the Berlin Crisis, that American and Soviet tanks faced each other, bringing the world to the brink of a third world war. Only foreigners, employees of the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany in the GDR, and GDR officials were allowed to cross the border at this point. After German reunification, the Wall was quickly torn down here, and the current guard booths and barriers are faithful replicas of the originals. The site now serves as an open-air museum, and the nearby Wall Museum tells the story of spectacular escape attempts from East to West, displaying original artifacts. The Asisi Panorama, within walking distance, offers an artistic view of divided Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie is open around the clock and free of charge, making it an ideal stop during a city tour. It is a place that captures the imagination of both adults and young people and provides an important history lesson.
