Kórnik Castle

Kórnik Castle is a historic residence located in the heart of Greater Poland, about half an hour's drive from Poznań. The building was erected on a marshy island, and its origins date back to the 15th century, when the castle was completed on the site of an earlier defensive tower. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous reconstructions, changing its style from Gothic to Renaissance and transforming from a stronghold into an elegant residence. Its owners included notable families such as the Górkas, Czarnkowskis, and Działyńskis, with the last owner being Władysław Zamoyski, who bequeathed the estate to the Polish nation. The castle is associated with the legend of the White Lady, Teofila Działyńska, who is said to still roam its corridors. Today, the castle houses a museum, and around it stretches the Kórnik Arboretum, the oldest and most species-rich dendrological garden in Poland. Visitors can admire the historic interiors, including the preserved cellars, and take advantage of guided tours or audio guides. This site appeals to both adults and families with children, offering also a café and a gift shop. The castle is open seasonally, and public transport stops nearby.
