Forest Narrow-Gauge Railways
The Forest Narrow-Gauge Railways in Hajnówka are a historic tourist attraction located in the heart of the Białowieża Forest. The railway was built in 1916, when the German military administration needed an efficient way to transport timber out of the forest. Russian and French prisoners of war, as well as local people, were involved in its construction. After years of intensive use, timber transport ceased in 1991, and since then the railway has served exclusively tourist purposes. Currently, it operates on two routes: from Hajnówka to Topiło (11 km) and to the Leśna River Valley (6 km). Rides are seasonal, with the first ones in 2026 scheduled for May 1st at 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. It is a great opportunity to learn about the region's history and admire the picturesque landscapes of the Białowieża Forest. The railway is an attraction for the whole family, as well as for school groups and history enthusiasts. On-site facilities include toilets, guided tours, and paid parking. Tickets can be purchased online at kolejki-lesne.pl.
