Moving nativity scene in Kudowa-Czermna

The moving nativity scene in Kudowa-Czermna is an extraordinary, handcrafted work by local carpenter František Stepan, displayed in a 19th-century house at 101 Tadeusza Kościuszki Street, right next to the Chapel of Skulls. Hundreds of wooden figures move to the rhythm of Christmas carols, depicting scenes of the Nativity and the daily life of highlanders. The nativity scene was created in 1924, and its maker devoted 20 years of his life to it. Initially, the figures were moved by a crank, but since 1927, when electricity was brought to Czermna, it has been powered by an electric motor. Among the approximately 250 figures, you can see goats, woodcutters, a swimming swan, and even a porter carrying bundles. In the background are miniatures of famous buildings, such as the townhouses of Duszniki, the town hall in Kłodzko, and the basilicas in Wambierzyce and Bardo. Next to the nativity scene, there are also handcrafted organ pipes, built by Stepan between 1930 and 1938. This place is full of warmth and tradition, delighting both children and adults, offering unforgettable experiences. The nativity scene is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and admission is free.
