Herrenchiemsee Palace

Herrenchiemsee Palace, also known as the New Palace, is the youngest of the three residences of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, located on Herrenchiemsee Island in Lake Chiemsee in Prien am Chiemsee. Built as a tribute to the French monarch Louis XIV, the palace was intended to be an improved version of Versailles. Construction began in 1878 based on designs by Georg Dollmann, but was halted after seven years due to lack of funds, leaving about 30% of the rooms unfurnished. Today, visitors can admire the lavishly decorated royal apartments during a guided tour lasting about 40 minutes, conducted in English or German. The palace also houses the Ludwig II Museum and a free exhibition about bats. The gardens and the entrance hall are accessible free of charge, and there is a café and a gift shop on site. Admission tickets cost 11 euros for adults, 10 euros for students and seniors, while children under 18 enter for free. Combined tickets covering other Bavarian castles are also available.
