Aachen Cathedral

Aachen Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary, is one of the most important examples of Carolingian architecture in Europe. Located in the center of Aachen, in western Germany, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its origins date back to Charlemagne, who made Aachen his favorite city and commissioned the construction of a palace chapel. The building, designed by Odo of Metz, was modeled on the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. Its characteristic octagonal plan symbolizes eternity, and the interior houses many precious treasures, including a medieval pulpit and chandelier. The cathedral also contains the imperial throne, on which 30 German rulers were crowned. The legend of the Wolf's Gate and the she-wolf figure is associated with the construction period. Visitors can admire the late Gothic choir and learn about the history of relics connected to Charlemagne. The cathedral is accessible to people with disabilities, offers audio guides, and guided tours are available.
