Lake Chiemsee

Lake Chiemsee is Bavaria's largest natural lake, located about 80 km southeast of Munich, near Rosenheim and on the way to Salzburg. This glacial lake, formed 15,000–20,000 years ago, is sometimes called the 'Bavarian Sea'. It covers roughly 80 km² and reaches a maximum depth of 73.4 metres. On its eastern shore lie three islands: two inhabited – Herrenchiemsee (Men's Island) and Frauenchiemsee (Women's Island) – plus the small, uninhabited Krautinsel. The main attraction is Herrenchiemsee Palace, modelled on Versailles and built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The palace can only be visited on a guided tour (in English or German), and inside you'll find the Ludwig II Museum, restaurants, a shop and toilets. On Herrenchiemsee Island, don't miss the Baroque Augustinian monastery, known as the Old Palace, which now houses a museum and art galleries. The island is famous for its bats – 15 of Bavaria's 23 species live here – and offers a seven-kilometre walking trail. Frauenchiemsee charms with its monastic atmosphere and tranquillity. In summer, horse-drawn carriages operate, and in winter the islands remain accessible when the area is covered in snow. It's an ideal spot for history buffs, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, hikers and cyclists (though cycling is not allowed on the islands).
