Chęciny Castle

Chęciny Castle is a picturesque ruin of a royal fortress, towering over the town and the surrounding area from Góra Zamkowa. Built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries on the initiative of King Wenceslaus II, it was expanded by Casimir the Great, becoming one of the most powerful strongholds in Poland. For centuries it served political and treasury functions – the crown treasury and church valuables were stored here. It hosted, among others, Queen Bona Sforza, who resided at the castle before returning to Italy. Today, the castle is open as a permanent ruin with reconstructed towers and a viewpoint in the eastern tower. Visitors can explore individually or with a guide (by reservation). Parking is available on Jędrzejowska Street, about 350 m below the castle. The site is not wheelchair accessible and pets are not allowed. Nearby attractions include Raj Cave, Mount Miedzianka, and the Tokarnia Open-Air Museum.
