Fort Rajsko is one of the most valuable monuments of the Kraków Fortress, located on Rajsko Hill in the Swoszowice district, about 349 meters above sea level. Built between 1881 and 1884, it was one of the first artillery forts in the fortress and one of the largest of its kind in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, covering an area of approximately 2,600 square meters. Its strategic position made it a key observation and defense point in the southeastern ring of fortifications. In December 1914, the fort survived heavy Russian shelling almost unscathed, defending Kraków together with the neighboring forts Kosocice and Prokocim. Over 500 soldiers were stationed there, with 24 artillery positions and 3 caponiers at their disposal. The structure is notable for its innovative, large-scale use of concrete, from which monolithic barracks, shelters, and caponiers were cast, covered with a five-meter layer of earth. Architecturally, the fort combines military austerity with elements of classicism, such as the main gate portal and white arched arcades contrasting with brick. Inside, there is a vast main shelter with two vaulted powder rooms, with walls and ceilings about 2 meters thick. Today, the fort, surrounded by valuable greenery, is visible from over 40 kilometers away and is one of the most beautifully situated forts in Kraków. After years of serving as storage, it remains undeveloped but can be visited as part of the Kraków Fortress Trail, which offers walking, cycling, and driving routes.
