Bayreuth is a charming town in northern Bavaria, located about 70 kilometers from Nuremberg, in the region of Upper Franconia. Although not a typical tourist destination, it attracts fans of Richard Wagner's music and lovers of Baroque architecture. The famous Wagner Festival has been held here since 1876, and in 2012 the Margravial Opera House was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The opera, built between 1744 and 1748 to a design by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena, impresses with its fully wooden interior – from the walls to the private boxes. It is one of the few Baroque theaters in Europe preserved in its original state. After renovation in 2013–2018, it looks as it did on its opening day. Visitors can explore it independently with an audio guide or join a guided tour lasting about 45 minutes. It is also worth strolling through the old town, where most attractions are within walking distance. Some gardens and palaces lie a few kilometers from the center, but they are accessible by public transport. The surrounding region is famous for having the highest density of breweries in the world. Bayreuth is an ideal place for those who want to combine high culture with discovering lesser-known corners of Germany.
